Today’s blog comes from a big word with a rather simple meaning when you break it down; and from my little paralyzed Dachshund who decided it would be an awesome idea to try this. Immune-mediated (immune system started it), thrombocytopenia (decrease in platelets; our cells that clot our blood).

The thyroid gland is a butterfly shaped gland the lies on either side of the trachea (windpipe) and is vital in your pet’s metabolic function. Hyperthyroidism is the overproduction of thyroid hormone; this is often a disease of older cats. In cats the gland often enlarges due to the overproduction of hormones, forming nodules which are often benign (non-cancerous). Many organs are affected by hyperthyroidism, especially the heart.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) – is the most prevalent disease you and your cat may face as they age. It typically affects up to 40% of cats over the age of 10 and 80% of cats over the age of 15. To begin with healthy kidneys are the filtering organs and perform many functions, including filtering the blood, making urine, and regulating blood pressure (BP). CKD refers to the persistent loss of kidney function over time and can have many health problems associated with it. It is important to monitor your cat as they age to watch for the development of CKD.

These terms can be used interchangeably during the end-of-life process (EOL). Both are meant to ensure that your pet remains comfortable and experiences a dignified or "good death".
